Can I fight a medical bill or insurance denial myself?
Frequently asked questions
Is PapaShield really free, or is there a catch?
All six tools are free to use and do not require an account. There is an optional Premium subscription with extra letter variants and PDF export, but every tool's core output stays free either way, and nothing free is held back or watered down to push you toward paying.
Does PapaShield give legal or medical advice?
No. PapaShield provides educational templates and general information. For advice specific to your situation, consult a qualified attorney, medical provider, insurer, or patient advocate.
Do I need an account to use the tools?
No. Every free tool works without creating an account. An account is only needed if you want to save your output, download a branded PDF, or come back to edit something later.
How is this different from just calling my insurance company myself?
You can absolutely call your insurer directly. PapaShield helps you prepare for that call or written appeal, so you're not figuring out what to say or ask on the spot, and you have a clear written record of what you sent, in case you need to follow up.
Can disputing a bill or appealing a denial get me in trouble?
Disputing a bill or filing an appeal is a normal, allowed part of the billing and insurance process. It does not put you at legal risk on its own. It also does not pause your other obligations, so keep reading your bills and any deadlines closely while your dispute or appeal is in progress.
Will disputing a bill stop it from going to collections?
Not automatically. A provider can generally still send a bill to collections while you're disputing it unless they've agreed otherwise in writing. If you're actively disputing a charge, ask the billing office directly whether they'll pause collections while it's under review, and get that answer in writing if you can.
Is my information kept private if I don't create an account?
Yes. If you don't create an account, nothing you type into a tool is saved after you leave the page. PapaShield never sells your information, and our full privacy practices are in our Privacy Policy.
What should I do if my situation is urgent or complex?
If your situation involves urgent medical needs, significant financial risk, or complex legal questions, consider contacting a licensed attorney, patient advocate, or your state insurance department in addition to using PapaShield's tools.
